Growing up in Brooklyn, surrounded by my rich Guyanese roots, food was more than just something we ate—it was a way of connecting, celebrating, and feeling at home. Our kitchen was always alive with the smell of fresh-baked breads, holiday cakes, fragrant curries, soft rotis, cheese straws, and all the little pastry treats that made life sweeter. These dishes weren’t just about flavor; they held stories. They brought us together during holidays, lazy Sundays, and moments when the world outside felt too big. Each bite carried the warmth of family, the comfort of tradition, and the quiet reassurance that no matter what, we were grounded in something real. Food has a way of doing that—it’s never just about filling our stomachs. It’s about the feelings it stirs up, the memories it revives, and the sense of belonging it gives us. And for me, every meal is a chance to reconnect with those roots and share a little piece of that love with others. As I have embraced my fifties, I have come to realize that I can no longer partake in some of the foods that I once ate regularly. My regular consumption of these beloved dishes has led to food intolerances. Unlike allergies, intolerances manifest as digestive or metabolic issues, causing discomfort after overindulging in certain foods. Personally, eating too many starchy foods, especially breads, disrupts the pH balance in my gut and triggers an itching sensation. That might be a lot of personal detail, but what the heck—I felt compelled to share. While I cherished these foods, I've embarked on a journey of healing that necessitates letting several of them go. Many of these dishes no longer align with my healing journey and have become relics of the past. It is a glaring reminder that sometimes, in order to evolve and heal, we must bid farewell to what no longer serves us. How About You? It's essential to ask ourselves: What are you holding on to that no longer serves you and is preventing you from healing? This is a profound question that many of us must grapple with in order to progress and elevate our lives. When we are willing to take this courageous step forward, a world of possibilities unfolds before us. For instance, giving up certain foods, such as bread, has led to better gut health and reduced bloating. In addition, sacrificing early morning workouts in favor of more sleep can significantly improve cognitive ability and balance out stress levels, while replacing sugary drinks with water can support healthy weight management and overall hydration. So, what is it that you truly want, and what steps are you prepared to take to achieve it? I often advise people to dig deep and ask themselves how they want to feel. It's about pursuing that feeling with unwavering determination. Let's be honest about the things that are no longer serving us and be driven by our aspirations for healing and how we want to feel each day. This introspective journey can lead to transformative personal growth and fulfillment. So, what are you ready to give up, and what do you want to heal from? This brave journey of discovery is right in front of you... just take the first step forward. We are right here with you. Much love,

CHANGING EVERYTHING...CHANGES EVERYTHING It’s hard to believe this photo of me and my bestie, Dr. Tyus, was taken almost a decade ago. What you can’t see from our backs in that picture is that I was 40 weeks pregnant — belly full, body heavy, teetering on the edge of new life. I was quite literally laboring, preparing to welcome my second child. Dr. Tyus had flown in from Washington, D.C. to be with me, not just as my best friend, but as part of a deeper, spiritual support team. Her mom came...
IT HURTS!...BUT DO DAT SH!T ANYWAY In the early part of February, life came at me fast — literally. My family and I were driving back from a weekend trip. We saw a bunch of friends that we hadn't seen in a while and felt like the trip was generally productive. Out of nowhere, a deer leapt onto the highway, with no time to swerve. The impact was loud... violent... and jarring. All the airbags deployed around us. Metal twisted, glass shattered, and just like that, our car was totaled. We sat...
WHAT HAPPENS IF ALL THE VEGGIES ARE GONE? Did you know that every time you make a purchase, you’re shaping the market? Your food choices influence what’s available, what thrives, and what disappears. Recently, I had a heartfelt conversation with a friend who is an urban farmer. We shared our excitement about offering fresh, diverse produce and products to our customers, pouring our passion into every item we grow and create. But there’s a harsh reality—when these carefully cultivated foods...
