When I first began my work as a lifestyle medicine health coach and chef, I was very intentional about not using the word vegan in my marketingâeven though Iâm often pigeonholed into that category. Back then, and honestly even now, vegan felt like a heavy word. It sounded like sacrifice⊠like a red pen slashing through all the foods people love. And that just didnât sit right with me. Because the work of a health coach? Itâs not about snatching things away. Itâs about guiding people gentlyâstep by stepâtoward small changes in their lifestyle and diet that build over time, until they look up and realize theyâre living differently⊠and feeling better for it. Now, letâs clear something up. The terms plant-based and vegan often get used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Believe it or not, simply saying I was a âvegan chefâ used to turn people away from my services. The word vegan often conjures up a list of "can'ts" and "don'ts" in peopleâs minds. And while many people could benefit from reducing certain foods, theyâre not always readyâor willingâto give it all up cold turkey (pun intended). So instead, I leaned into the title plant-based chef and health coach. It felt softer. More approachable. More âHey, you got this.â A lot of people think that moving toward a plant-based lifestyle means a complete overhaul. But hereâs what I know: youâre probably closer to it than you think. There are only a few cultures on Earth whose diets are primarily made up of animal-based foodsâthe Sioux of South Dakota, Brazilian Gauchos, the Chukotka of the Russian Arctic, and the Maasai of Kenya, to name a few. And their high-meat diets? They work because of their specific environments and the quality of their food sources. But for the rest of us? Most of our plates already include a good amount of plantsâsome roasted veggies here, a salad there, maybe a bowl of rice or a handful of beansâwith fish, chicken, or beef alongside. Youâre already doing it. So the next time someone suggests a plant-based lifestyle, donât roll your eyes and write it off. Itâs not about restrictionâitâs about awareness and inclusion.â My belief: If fruits, veggies, legumes, and grains are invited to the table, youâre well on your way to being plant-based. And if the word plant-based doesnât quite vibe with you, try these on for size: Both terms shift the conversation from whatâs being taken away to whatâs being added in. They help us see the beauty and abundance in plant-rich meals. So tell me⊠Hereâs Whatâs Happening This Week: đż Check Out What Weâre Bringing to Market â Our schedule has shifted a bit, so take a look. Hope you enjoy every bite of it. TEACH THEM TO FISH How do you empower your children as you take your family on a journey to better eating and living? One of my clients recently called me, feeling a bit frustrated. She couldnât figure out what to feed her picky son. He was stuck in his ways, only eating a handful of familiar foods like chicken nuggets and potato bites. She loved our meal prep options but, when doing the math, creating a separate meal plan for her toddler didnât quite seem practical, especially when trying to...
YOUR LINEAGE MAY BE A MIRROR OF WHAT YOUR FUTURE HOLDS I had a heart-to-heart conversation with a dear friend recently. She was visibly anxious, her voice tinged with concern, as she spoke about her familyâs medical history. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer⊠these werenât just words to herâthey were real, lived experiences woven into the fabric of her familyâs story. And as I sat there listening to her, it made me pause and reflect. Do we really stop to ask the right questions about our...
LOCK IN...FIND YOUR PURPOSE WORK! Ever felt like there was something more you were supposed to be doingâbut you just couldnât quite put your finger on it? Like there was more to who you were meant to be, more to what you were meant to practice⊠maybe even your ministry? This was what I had trained for, prayed for. I had...
