STOP SUFFERING IN SILENCE AND IN SILOS
Black women, we go through a lot.
Sometimes it's subtle, a whisper in the body. A fatigue that won’t let up. A shift in mood we can’t quite name.
Sometimes it roars.
Sister A may be battling the silent waves of menopause.
Sister B, grappling with the pain and unpredictability of fibroids.
Sister C, navigating the hormonal rollercoaster of PCOS.
These are not isolated events. These are our realities.
"If you are a Black woman not in community with other Black women, you're cheating yourself of the Often - Imitated - Never Duplicated love we share." — Stephanie Perry
Let that land.
I've had the honor of sitting in heart-to-heart conversations with Black women—clients, sisters, friends—who are feeling the rumblings of change deep in their bodies. The kind of change that demands attention. Demands stillness. Demands truth.
These women are noticing things:
- The energy isn’t the same.
- The sleep isn’t restful.
- The cycle is... off.
- The body is speaking, loudly.
And yet, too often, they believe they are the only one.
That their struggle is unique. That no one else will understand. That being vulnerable means being weak.
So, what do we do?
We button it up. We smile through it. We endure.
Because we’ve been told to be strong. To hold it together. To "not let them see you sweat."
But beloved, this strength—this badge we wear—is a double-edged sword.
It can protect.
But it can also isolate.
So many of us suffer in silence, wrapped in shame, wrapped in worry.
But what if I told you that silence isn’t where healing ends... it's where it begins?
Yes, silence has its place. It invites reflection. It allows you to tune in.
But silence must eventually give way to voice.
And voice must be received in community.
Community is sacred.
It’s where truth is held gently.
Where healing is mirrored back to you.
Where accountability doesn’t feel like judgment, but love.
Where you remember—you are never, and have never been, alone.
We were never meant to carry this alone.
We were never meant to suffer in isolation.
We were never meant to navigate health crises—big or small—in the dark.
“I am because we are.” — Ubuntu Proverb
That’s not just a saying—it’s a lifeline.
You deserve to laugh, to cry, to release.
You deserve to be seen in your entirety—not just your strength, but your softness. Your struggle. Your story.
If you’re in a season of shift—physically, mentally, spiritually—know this:
There is a tribe that sees you, gets you, and is waiting to walk with you.
Here are some tips to help you identify and connect with a supportive community:
Identify Your Values and Goals: Before seeking a community, clarify your own values, goals, and priorities related to health and well-being. This will help you find a group that shares similar interests and aspirations.
Trust Your Instincts: Listen to your intuition when evaluating potential communities. Choose a group where you feel valued, empowered, and welcomed, and where you believe you can make a meaningful contribution while receiving support for your own well-being.
Engage in Online Challenges or Campaigns: Participate in online health challenges, campaigns, or initiatives organized by reputable organizations or influencers in the wellness space. This can connect you with a community of individuals working towards common health goals.
Get an Accountability Partner: An accountability partner is someone who provides support, encouragement, and motivation to help you stay focused and committed to your goals. This individual serves as a source of external accountability, holding you responsible for following through on your commitments and progress towards your wellness goals and you can do that same for them.
Join Fitness Classes or Wellness Programs: Participating in fitness classes, yoga sessions, meditation groups, or wellness programs can introduce you to individuals who share your commitment to health and well-being. These settings offer a social and supportive environment to cultivate relationships.
Contribute and Support Others: Once you've found a community that resonates with you, actively engage by sharing your experiences, insights, and support with other members. Building reciprocal relationships and offering assistance can deepen your connection with the community.
Sis, you are not too much.
You are not being dramatic.
You are not alone.
You are worthy of being well—and being witnessed.
Let this be your reminder:
You don’t have to carry it all.
You just have to let someone carry a little bit with you.
By following these tips and being proactive in seeking out a community that aligns with your values and mission for improving health and well-being, you can create a supportive network that nurtures your holistic wellness goals.
